IS A MEDICATION ABORTION SAFE?

Medical abortion has been used safely for more than 15 years. Serious complications are really rare, but can happen. These include:

• the abortion pills don't work and the pregnancy doesn't end

• some of the pregnancy tissue is left in your uterus

• blood clots in your uterus

• bleeding too much or too long

• infection

• allergic reaction to one of the medicines

These problems aren't common. If they do happen, they're usually easy to take care of with medication or other treatments.

In extremely rare cases, some complications can be very serious or even life threatening. Call your doctor or clinic right away if you:

• have no bleeding within 24 hours after taking the second medicine.

• have heavy bleeding from your vagina that soaks through more than 2 maxi pads in an hour, for 2 or more hours in a row

• pass large clots (bigger than a lemon) for more than 2 hours

• have belly pain or cramps that don't get better with pain medication

• have a fever of 100.4℉ or higher more than 24 hours after taking the abortion pills.

• have weakness, nausea, vomiting, and/or diarrhea that lasts more than 24 hours after taking them.

You should start to feel better the day after your abortion. Feeling sick with nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, belly pain, or a fever for more than 24 hours after taking (the second set of pills) can be a sign of infection. Call your doctor or clinic right away if you have any of those symptoms. Serious problems can cause death in the most rare cases, but abortion is typically very safe. In fact, abortion at any gestation is 14 times safer than childbirth.

If you have complications during your medication abortion, you contact the doctor. In the unlikely event that you are still pregnant, your provider will discuss your options with you. You may need another dose of medication or to have an in-clinic abortion procedure to end the pregnancy.

Like all medications, the abortion pill isn't right for everyone. If you have certain medical conditions or take certain medications, the abortion pill may not be right for you. Your provider will help you decide if the abortion pill is the right option for you.

Abortion means ending a pregnancy. There are two main options: an abortion procedure (also called in-clinic abortion) and the abortion pill (also called medication abortion). Choosing the right kind of abortion for you will depend on how far along you are in your pregnancy, what's available at the health center where you're getting the abortion, and what feels most comfortable to you. Pregnancy stage limits

(Your pregnancy stage, or how far along you are in pregnancy, is calculated based on the first day of your last period. We'll figure it out for you—just give us the first day of your last period. How far along you are may also be determined or confirmed by doing an ultrasound before you have an abortion.) For example, some states might ban abortions starting at 22 weeks of pregnancy, which means that you can get an abortion through 21 weeks and 6 days of pregnancy. Other states might ban abortion after 20 weeks or 24 weeks, and still others don't have any specific limits on how far along in pregnancy you can get an abortion.

In addition to these state limits, individual abortion providers decide how far into pregnancy they want to offer abortion, so just because your state doesn't ban abortion until 22 weeks, that doesn't mean every abortion provider in your state will offer abortions through 21 weeks and 6 days of pregnancy.

Waiting periods

The steps leading up to having an abortion may differ depending on what state you will have the abortion in. That's because different states have different laws about abortion. Different states have different laws for political reasons, not because abortion is more or less safe in different states. These laws may make it harder to get an abortion, but they don't make abortion less safe.

For example, in some states, you can have a consultation, ultrasound, and abortion all in one day. In other states, you may need to have your consultation or ultrasound a day or two before the abortion. That's because those states have what is called a "waiting period." Some states have a 24-hour waiting period, which means you're required to wait 24 hours between the consultation and the abortion. Some states have a 48-hour or even 72-hour waiting period. But in general, abortions are among the safest medical procedures available, and few people who get them have any serious complications. The rate of major complications is low, at 0.23% (meaning about 2 out of every 1,000 people getting an abortion will have major complications), which is similar to the rate of major complications caused by colonoscopies. And it actually has a lower rate of complications than wisdom tooth removal.
